Ferric chloride doesn’t pose the same health risks that nitric acid does. This solution is a mixture of ferric chloride, citric acid and water. Stop out mixture: We use a 50% / 50% mixture of acrylic paint and GAC 200 binder.Įtching the plate: We use the Edinburgh Etch at our studio. The aquatint solution is 80% Speedball Screen Filler and 20% deionized water. Our aquatint gives a tone similar to that of a rosin based aquatint. Soft ground: The soft ground we use is called the Orono soft ground, a mixture of 75% Graphic Chemical’s water based relief ink and 25% GAC 200 binder.Īquatint: We use an airbrush to apply aquatint to the plate. For print makers who are used to ‘smoking’ their plates, you can achieve a similar effect by applying a layer of black gouache for the highest contrast possible. The tinted mixture gives the copper plate a medium tone that allows marks to clearly show up. The following layer is 1 oz Future Floor wax mixed to 100 drops of Koh-I-Noor India ink. This first layer takes about 2-3 hours to dry. The first layer is a clear coat consisting of 100% pure Future Floor Wax. Each plate requires two layers of ground. Hard ground: Our acrylic hard ground is Johnson’s Future Floor Wax. We use soy sauce to degrease the surface the plate prior to applying the ground. Plate preparation: We have a selection of metal files to file and bevel plate edges.
